The clocks have turned back, the sun is setting earlier, and suddenly our evenings feel a little longer. It’s tempting to curl up on the couch and scroll the night away, but I think there’s something so much more wonderful we could do with that time.

Holiday Candle: Christmas Glow

Candlelight is one of my favorite things to paint, especially when it’s dressed up with a velvety plum ribbon for the holidays.

In this workshop, we’ll create a luminous flame against a rich, dark background. We’ll play with warm and cool colors, soft edges, and strong contrast so the candle feels like it’s truly glowing.

And of course, there’s that rich plum bow. We’ll bring it all together with loose, expressive marks and the little finishing touches that make this painting feel so special.

Christmas Tree: A Winter Wonderland

Who says Christmas trees have to be red and green? I absolutely love the soft pinks, dreamy blues, and twinkling golden lights in this one.

In this workshop, we’ll paint a frosted evergreen filled with layers of color, delicate snowy branches, and little pops of light that sparkle against a soft, rosy background.

You’ll discover how to suggest the fullness of a tree without painting every branch, letting loose marks and lovely color relationships do the work.

Winter Lights: A Glowing Evening

Little golden lights glowing in the distance on a winter evening, set against all those deep blues and purples. This one feels like magic to me.

In this workshop, we’ll create a nighttime landscape full of rich color, a dramatic sky, and sparkling lights that bring the whole scene to life.

We’ll explore how warm and cool colors play together, how to create the feeling of light against darkness, and how just a few bright marks can completely transform a painting.

This one is a little different from our workshops.

There’s no step-by-step instruction, just an hour of painting together with the Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack playing the whole time. It’s the coziest hour of the season!

You’ll also pick up my simple trick for colored lights: a darker, saturated color first, then a bright pop of lighter value right on top. That’s where the glow comes from.

One of my favorite things about this painting is how the lights spill their warmth onto the snow. It’s such a beautiful reminder that the light changes everything it touches.

Is Holiday Glow suitable for beginners?

Whether you're relatively new to soft pastels or have been painting for years, you're welcome to join us! Valerie encourages a playful, exploratory approach to painting, so you can enjoy these experiences at your own pace.

What supplies will I need?

You'll need a small set of soft pastels and suitable pastel paper. Really, that's it. You do not need a massive collection of pastels for these tutorials.

How long are the painting workshops?

Each workshop is prerecorded, so you can pause, rewind, and paint at your own pace. Each tutorial runs between 30 - 90 minutes.

How do I access my collection?
